Augmented Reality Research (2022-2023)
Aim
This MSc student project investigated the use of Augmented Reality (AR) during anatomy practicals in the FLAME lab, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience. The project compared how students learned anatomy with an AR app and with traditional methods, such as books, plastic models, and cadavers.
What I did
I proposed the project in 2022 and helped to supervise it. My work included these tasks:
- I organised a free trial of the Complete Anatomy software.
- I installed the software on PCs and iPads for the practical session.
- I helped to design educational content that aligned with the learning outcomes for the practical sessions.
- I gave students feedback on study design, ethical approval applications, and academic writing.
Results
Students enjoyed the AR app and found it engaging. Most felt that it should add to the traditional methods of learning, not replace them.

Presentation
I presented some of the findings at EdTech 2023, the conference of the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA). The presentation title was “Investigating the Use of Augmented Reality (AR) Technology to Enhance Anatomy Teaching – a case study”. You can view or download the slides below.
